About Mr Ashwin Unnithan

Specialist hip and knee care, centred around you.

Trained across three specialist units, with one focus

As an active youngster with a passion for sport, I was a regular visitor to the orthopaedic department. Eventually, one injury too many put an end to my sporting ambitions, but it inspired a new ambition: to work in the specialty that had made such a difference to my early life. Much to my parents’ relief, I swapped hours on the playing field for hours in the library.

Even then, I did not anticipate how much orthopaedics would become part of my life beyond work. From family members and neighbours to fellow gym members and tennis enthusiasts, barely a day goes by without an orthopaedic question. It has been a privilege to work in this specialty, and I remain grateful for the opportunity.

Training and experience

Mr Unnithan completed his basic surgical training in Surrey and Sussex and obtained an MSc Surgical Science from University College London. His specialist training followed the South West London programme and included a 12-month trauma fellowship in New Zealand. He went on to undertake further fellowships in complex hip and knee surgery at the Bristol Hip Unit and the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, with knee and revision surgery training also at St Albans City Hospital.

His medical training and work have taken him across three continents, from remote hospitals to major specialist centres. Working with people from different backgrounds has shaped his approach to listening, understanding individual needs and adapting care to each patient.

Mr Unnithan has published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international meetings across Europe and the United States. His work received the Best Scientific Presentation award at the British Trauma Society meeting in 2014. In clinical practice, he focuses on helping patients understand their options and work towards their individual goals.
